Managing Editor – Fiction Books

One of the world’s largest media companies, Egmont is the UK’s top specialist children’s publisher selling almost 40 million books and magazines each year for babies to teens. The company is home to some of the world’s best loved authors, illustrators and characters such as Michael Morpurgo, Andy Stanton, Michelle Magorian and Lemony Snicket plus Winnie-the-Pooh, Wallace & Gromit, Tintin, Mr Men, Barbie, Thomas the Tank Engine and Ben 10.

We are now looking for a Managing Editor to work as part of our fiction team.

In this role you will help manage and develop a wide range of books across our lists, from full-colour first chapter books, right up to ground-breaking YA.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Overall responsibility for managing the editorial schedule across the fiction list and co-ordinating the work of freelance editors;
  • Providing commissioning members of the team with a full range of proofreading and copyediting support;
  • Reading and reporting on manuscript submissions;
  • Working closely with design and production to see titles through from manuscript to finished copies;
  • Overseeing and implementing the reprints/backlist/ebooks process;
  • Communicating with authors and agents, in conjunction with the team, as part of the day-to-day title management;
  • Ensuring the quality and consistency of promotional copy, including among others rights guides, catalogues and selling sheets;
  • Occasionally writing copy for blurbs and advance information sheets.

Ideally you will be an experienced and confident proof-reader and copy-editor. You will have an exceptional eye for detail and strong instincts for what makes and shapes a great story. You will be extremely organised and have the ability to work efficiently under pressure. You will feel confident working independently, but thrive on collaborating with others as part of a larger creative team. You will be passionate about children’s fiction with strong knowledge of the current children’s market. You will be a confident, thoughtful and sensitive communicator.

This is a brilliant opportunity for the right person to become a key member of a busy fiction team, and work on titles from authors as diverse as Jim Smith, Katherine Woodfine, David Levithan, Kevin Brooks and Michael Grant.
