Bookshop Manager

Role Purpose

Accountable for the daily management of the bookshop and staff. Accountable for customer satisfaction and compliance with all policies and procedures ensuring all cash handling and monetary transactions are accurately recorded, banked and secured. Accountable for stock reconciliation and that the store displays are optimised for best results for sales. Accountable for staff training and management to maintain good working relationships.

 

Key accountabilities & responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the staff training and development, ensuring their skills are utilised for best results in order to give excellent customer satisfaction and sales.
  • Accountable for ensuring all cash handling procedures are adhered to and any discrepancies are reported to the Director immediately.
  • Ensure daily banking and reconciliation is achieved accurately and securely.
  • Responsible for ensuring the shop displays are changed regularly and give the best possible focus for sales.
  • Responsible for ensuring staff are able to offer excellent advice to customers on book selection and are keeping up to date with the Book market and industry.
  • Responsible for ensuring excellent customer service is offered by all staff and they effectively deal with any complaints to minimise negative customer feedback.
  • Assist the Director with book promotions and events as and when required.
  • Responsible for the shops stock control ensuring the recording and reordering is completed on a timely basis.
  • Assist with external and internal audits as required.
  • Manage staff rotas to ensure correct cover, managing leave and absence, assist the Director with recruitment as required.
  • Keep up to date with reading and changes in the book industry through all forms of media.
  • Responsible for ensuring the shop is cleaned, secured and complies with Health & Safety legislation.

 

Key skills and knowledge required: (i.e. those required to fulfil the role, including qualifications):

  • Excellent knowledge of British literature both past and present with a natural passion and enjoyment for reading.
  • Excellent all round communication skills
  • Educated to “A” level standard
  • Experience of managing people
  • Excellent proven PC skills
  • Excellent numerical skills
  • Accuracy and ability in detailed handling of paperwork and accounting

Any additional relevant information:

The post holder will be required to assist with some promotional events and may occasionally work from the Chorleywood shop. A flexible approach to working hours is also required with own transport (essential) to travel between shops and events.
