PRODUCTION MANAGER: HENI PUBLISHING

THE ROLE

To plan, negotiate and oversee book production for all Heni publications, to ensure cost-effective, timely and quality production of new publications and reprints. To be responsible for all day-to-day production work, working closely with the Publishing and Design Managers, and reporting to the Publishing Director.

KEY DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Responsible for all aspects of book production including finding most appropriate production suppliers for projects and negotiating all requirements for Heni books with them; managing relationships with all suppliers; overseeing and monitoring all production processes to ensure the highest quality and consistency
  • Work closely with Publishing Director and Sales Manager on book costings; responsible for obtaining estimates and book dummies from most appropriate suppliers to meet publishing schedules and budget
  • Responsible for circulating and managing production schedules, sign-off and reporting documents; putting in place production policies and procedures to ensure consistency, cost control and adherence to schedules
  • Responsible for preparing technical specifications for external suppliers, based on editorial specifications, and monitoring quality; creatively leading on production solutions for all HENI books and limited edition publications
  • Overseeing and ensuring quality control on all aspects of image repro for books, making use of in-house Epson printers and specialist software to create proofs where possible; liaising with and overseeing retouchers’ work on images; going on press when required
  • Responsible for drawing up and co-ordinating multiple book schedules with Publishing Manager to meet editorial/market requirements; ensuring internal and external teams deliver materials on time through clear communication of deadlines and regular progress chasing
  • Responsible for progress chasing design to ensure requirements and deadlines are met and to ensure adherence to agreed book specifications; clearly communicate deadlines for print run sign-off and paper order cut-off dates and issue/manage final print specification documents
  • Organise deliveries of books from printers to various destinations; check and authorise purchase orders for suppliers
  • Maintain awareness of industry developments and market trends; identify and recommend potential new suppliers to widen the pool of repro houses and printers with whom Heni works; keep in regular contact with both new and existing suppliers to meet changing production requirements and ensure cost-effective production processes

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-4 years’ experience working in production on illustrated books
  • Proven technical knowledge in the production of illustrated books
  • Excellent negotiating and budget management skills
  • Proven ability to manage and successfully keep to production schedules and deadlines
  • Ability to run and refine accurate production estimates
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to prioritise effectively and pursue a number of projects in parallel
  • Collaborative and flexible approach to working with others
  • Self-motivation and initiative
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Printing industry knowledge and relationships with repro houses and printers in Europe and worldwide
  • A passion for print materials, techniques and processes
  • Experience of picture clearances and copyright permissions
  • Experience working with contemporary artists
