Macmillan Children’s Books, a division of Pan Macmillan (www.panmacmillan.com), is one of the UK’s leading children’s publishers; creating great stories for all ages for over 150 years. Split into two divisions - Macmillan Over 6s and Macmillan Under 6s - the house is the original home of classics such as Alice in Wonderland and The Water Babies, and now publishes over 400 books a year for babies, children and young adults. The key tasks of the role will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Supporting the 6+ editorial team on editorial tasks on fiction, non-fiction and poetry titles
  • Seeing through reprints, reissues, export and new cover editions
  • Liaising with authors, agents and freelancers on individual projects
  • Briefing covers, writing cover copy, completing Advance Information sheets and preparing catalogue copy
  • Logging and managing submissions
  • Managing invoices, royalty queries and clearing permissions
  • Taking minutes for editorial and pre-acquisition meetings

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be educated to degree-level or the equivalent in experience
  • Have proven proofreading skills, preferably having completed a course in the subject
  • Have office experience, ideally having spent a period of time in a publishing office, with basic knowledge of the life cycle of a book
  • Be digitally savvy, with good knowledge of the children’s book market and industry
  • Have strong communication skills, both written and oral, as well as numeracy skills
  • Be highly organized, work well under pressure and show great attention to detail
  • Be hard-working, enthusiastic, courteous and professional
  • Be able to demonstrate real interest in reading children’s fiction
  • Have good administrative skills with proven office experience.  Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Powerpoint would be an advantage
  • Have an ability to deal with relevant publishing systems, e.g. Biblio, Vista, File Director
