Sales Manager, Europe and Scandinavia

Summary of Role

The Quarto Group is seeking an enthusiastic and organized International Sales Manager with excellent communication skills to sell our wide range of books into European and Scandinavian markets. Responsible for the overall leadership and strategic direction, the European Sales Manager is charged with meeting and exceeding business objectives for sales and profitability.  Also, in this role the individual will be responsible for setting all sales goals for the sales team by country and for ensuring that sales plans, actions and reporting are in place to achieve these goals.  The ideal candidate will set and lead a dynamic strategic vision for the European and Scandinavian markets that maximises our core sales whilst creating new opportunities and partnerships.

Key Deliverables

The Market:

  • Manage all of Quarto Publishing Group sales activity (adults and kids) into European and Scandinavian markets
  • Manage day-to-day operations of International UK-based Sales Department. Supervise and direct activities of direct report(s), with responsibility to develop and encourage sales growth and ensure key sales activities are delivered as planned:
    • Create the weekly newsletter - (international calendar for backlist)
    • Organise monthly front list highlights
    • Supply necessary samples, advances, blads and catalogues
    • Work with Finance and Operations on Quarterly Commissions and Monthly Sales reports for each sales rep
    • Create and manage the International sales support and travel budgets
  • Maintain excellent relationships with key customers/buyers
  • Manage Commission sales force
  • Hold regular meetings with sales reps and key customers
  • Set sales targets for all reps/territories and manage those targets
  • Travel regularly to sales territories to evaluate sales and market conditions
  • Review market/customer data to best serve account needs
  • Set prices and discounts accordingly
  • Work with press and marketing to arrange author events and press coverage
  • Partner with accounts to build creative retail promotions
  • Report monthly on the performance of key accounts and reps/agents
  • Develop new business strategies and set development targets

In House:

  • Participate in weekly meeting with Quarto International Sales Department to make sure teams are aligned and shared needs/goals are met
  • Attend monthly sales UK/US meeting with publishers
  • Forecast weekly acquisition numbers and monthly print forecasts
  • Title forecast for seasonal list in advance of Quarto sales conferences
  • Provide data and feedback for quarterly management meetings
  • Attend book fairs and exhibitions, manage stand set-up, create physical and digital material for meetings and backlist promotions
  • Attend Quarto bi-annual sales conferences

Skills & Experience

  • 3-5 years’ experience in publishing export sales
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience of managing direct reports
  • Significant travel required
