The Managing Director will have overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Society and its staff. The Managing Director will report to the Chairman of Council and will be responsible for the overall strategic direction of the organisation, including implementing the agreed strategic plan for the Society and its finances. The Managing Director will also work closely with the Society’s journal editors, editorial boards and external societies.

Key responsibilities of the Managing Director will include, but are not limited to:

  • Implementing the strategy for the Society agreed by Council, and contribute to the development and review of this strategy, advising Council on relevant trends in publishing, competitor activity and new opportunities etc.
  • Ensuring the Society’s journals achieve their objectives by working with the journals’ editors, editorial boards and relevant external societies.
  • Together with the Chairman, work closely with UK and international orthopaedic associations to promote the adoption of the Society’s journals as member benefits and foster close ties.
  • Ensuring that the Society’s publishing systems are industry standard and fit for purpose, and also to initiate and lead any changes as required.
  • Attending relevant conferences and editorial board meetings in the UK and overseas.
  • Work with the Senior Management (SMT) Team and Accountant to propose the annual budget for the Society and review monthly management accounts during the year.
  • Be responsible for the management of all staff, including performance management, appraisals, training and development, as well as oversee staff recruitment.
  • Governance, legal and regulatory areas, where you will work with the Chairman to prepare agendas and papers for Council meetings, and prepare reports for relevant senior meetings.

This is a senior post and the successful candidate will have the ability to demonstrate clear, effective and consistent leadership and command credibility, both inside and outside the organisation.  You will have broad and significant experience at senior level in academic and professional publishing, with demonstrable business and financial management experience, including P&L responsibility.  A detailed understanding of current issues in academic/medical and professional publishing, future developments and their impact on society publishing is essential.

You will possess strong people management experience and an understanding of HR issues, as well as an excellent track record of delivering organisational change and improvement.  Experience of organising RFPs and successfully negotiating significant contracts with organisations and individuals, plus a strong network of relevant contacts within the publishing industry is also essential for this role.
