Academic Sales Representative – UK and Scandinavia

W W Norton & Company Inc is a leading provider of university textbooks books across a wide range of subjects, with particular focus in English Literature, Economics and Psychology. The UK office wishes to appoint an Academic Sales Representative, reporting to the Managing Director, to grow sales in the UK and Scandinavia. This role will be based in London and require extensive travel in the UK and abroad during term-time and one or two trips a year to the USA for sales meetings.

 

Key duties:

  • Win adoptions for new and backlist textbooks by visiting lecturers and persuasively pitching the strengths and features of each title
  • Negotiate bundle deals and special prices in order to win new business
  • Demonstrate and provide adopters with information about the extensive free online ancillary materials
  • Explore opportunities to grow e-textbook sales either directly to students or through departments
  • Work as a team with in house sales representative to build and maintain up-to-date lists of lecturers by discipline
  • Identify and target the best leads and campuses with most potential for visits
  • Manage follow-up communication together in order to develop long-term relationships
  • Maintain records of visits and subsequent communication with contacts on the CRM system
  • Attend and participate in team meetings to discuss results, ideas, tactics and pricing

 

Experience / skills required:

  • An academic sales representative with experience and an excellent track record
  • A confident communicator, who is able to understand, learn and present the merits of textbooks including subjects in which they are personally unfamiliar, both in meetings and in writing
  • The tenacity to chase adoption prospects over the long term
  • Good negotiation skills in order to win adoptions and maximise the number of copies purchased by each student enrolment
  • IT literate – able to use in house CRM and sales systems as well as sell online materials
  • Strong commercial awareness
  • The ability to work effectively in an office environment during the university vacations
  • Adaptability to work on current academic projects in addition to preparing for the next sales cycle
  • Fluent English speaker.  Other European languages helpful, but not required

Due to the close working relationships with the in-house team, the role will be office based in London, when not travelling.
