Managing Editor

We are looking for a managing editor to join the Adult Editorial team at Bloomsbury Publishing in London, the home of authors such as Susanna Clarke, Madeline Miller and Reni Eddo-Lodge. It’s an exciting time to join our team, as we expand our list and plan for future growth.

The managing editors at Bloomsbury are responsible for the project-management of our fiction and non-fiction titles – it’s a critical role in the team, and you will work closely with the commissioning editors, assistant editors and other departments to ensure that books run to schedule.

We are looking for someone with a passion for books and an eye for detail; who loves building relationships with authors, freelancers and colleagues; who is organised and efficient; and can take the initiative in improving processes. You will have project-management experience, preferably within publishing, but alternatively in a related discipline. We want someone with a drive to contribute to our market-leading titles!

The role

  • Overseeing the editorial process from start to finish for selected fiction and non-fiction titles – from engaging editorial freelancers to signing off final files to print
  • Responsible for keeping books on schedule
  • Liaising with authors and ensuring a high level of author care
  • Managing a team of freelance copy-editors, proof-readers, indexers, designers and cartographers
  • Handling text and image permissions
  • Planning plate sections where needed
  • Liaising with in-house departments, especially design and production
  • Handling legal and sensitivity reads
  • Managing progress on invoices and contracts, keeping all records in order
  • Keeping Biblio up-to-date with accurate title information

Additional information

The role is a full-time permanent position based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP.  When our offices re-open, it will be on a mandatory working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).

As well as a fantastic opportunity to join a global award-winning organisation, Bloomsbury offers competitive benefits, generous staff discounts and flexible working arrangements.

Please apply with a CV, covering letter, addressed to Human Resources (CV in Word or PDF format only) by 30 August 2021

Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK.
