We are a UK wide membership organisation for all health professionals working in adult, paediatric and adolescent rheumatology. BSR works to promote excellence in the care of people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders and to support those delivering it, involving patients and carers at every step.

We work to ensure that our rheumatology professionals have access to the latest in education, research and clinical best practice to provide high quality care. Our members look after patients of all ages, from children to adults and across the whole patient pathway. 

Job Summary 

We are recruiting for a Journal Publishing Assistant in our journals team. This is an exciting opportunity to start building a career within the academic publishing industry. Your role will support the development of our journals through handling of the online peer review submission system, as well as contributing to our digital and social media strategy.

The ideal candidate will be an excellent written and verbal communicator, passionate about building positive working relationships with a range of stakeholders, organised and methodical, and adaptable and open to innovation and change. Prior experience in publishing or digital or social media products is desirable but not essential.

Location

Our office is based in Central London but we are currently working remotely and you will be given the support and equipment needed to make this possible.

In this role you will:

  • Process manuscripts from receipt through to accepted copy using an online submission and peer review system.
  • Answer author, editor and other stakeholder queries.
  • Support the Journal Development Officer with compiling and running reports and analysing data.
  • Support the Journal Development Officer with handling Editorial Board workloads.
  • Assist in the training of new Editorial Board members.
  • Arrange meetings and circulate documents, write and circulate minutes.
  • Maintain and regularly update databases and spreadsheets.
  • Represent the journals and organisation at conferences and events.
  • Support the Journal Development Officer with podcast and video editing and hosting.
  • Support the Journal Development Officer and Head of Publishing with social media planning and implementation.
  • Perform wider research and reporting tasks and assist in the development of digital media projects.
  • Work with colleagues across the organisation on new product and process creation and application.
  • Assist with other reasonable general duties and tasks for the organisation when required.

  • Have excellent organisational and planning skills with a strong ability to multi-task and adapt to changes.
  • Have a collaborative work ethic and ability to engage positively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Are an excellent all-round communicator, highly detailed oriented.
  • Have demonstrable interest in science or medicine and publishing.
  • Can be professional at all times and supportive to our passionate customers and volunteers.

We want your experience of the following: 

  • Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to work on multiple projects with conflicting deadlines.
  • Strong IT skills.
  • Demonstrable experience in handling external stakeholders and communicating effectively.
  • Ability to develop strong positive working relationships across different teams and groups.
  • Experience in problem-solving and thinking of new ideas to improve processes or stakeholder experiences.
  • Experience of managing multiple tasks and projects to competing deadlines.
  • Knowledge of journal publishing, and online submission systems would be advantageous but not essential.
