We provide critical online and print information, decision support tools, software and services to lawyers who practice in law firms, in corporate legal departments and in the public sector. Purpose of the Job:

The Commissioning / Publishing Editor role concerns the commercial management of a portfolio of legal information publications, with responsibility for product revenue and profit as well as content development for individual titles and the portfolio as a whole.

The role involves title and author management of existing publications to ensure the delivery of customer-focused products and services, including the commissioning of new editions and new data as required. To champion the content of products and services to ensure that it is in line with company standards. 
 

Responsibilities:

Product Development and Management

• Accountable for the commercial performance of a portfolio of legal information products in subscription (online, looseleaf, periodical) or book format, to include the commissioning and timely delivery of content cross-media to print, ebook and online.
• Build and maintain high-quality relationships with authors, to include commissioning new authors, negotiating contract terms, and ensuring continued engagement with publishing strategy and future development plans. Authors are often high profile figures including Queens Counsel, partners in top law firms, and other industry experts
• Relationship management involves formal and informal channels, including but not limited to chairing meetings, attending conference or marketing events, and ensuring you keep abreast of latest developments in the field.
• Title management includes working with colleagues to ensure the publishing process, customer support, and sales and marketing activity is appropriate, timely and of high quality.
• Review, develop, the strategic longer-term content plan for key titles or the portfolio as a whole, and follow through to delivery on the plan
• Input into the shorter term plans for individual titles, including costs, pricing levels, revenues, schedules
• Manage costs, including seeking ways to maximise the profitability of your portfolio, and driving through cost savings.

Relationships

• Support Marketing and Segments teams in the development of the sales and marketing plans for project proposals
• Liaise with content delivery departments to plan and implement development of subscription services
• Work with marketing teams and participate in market research activities.
• Work with the Publishing Manager to assist in identifying rights issues and negotiation with content suppliers to optimise the company’s rights position
• Work with editorial, production, marketing and sales to ensure that publishing information is kept up to date

Qualifications

 

Relevant Experience Required:• A graduate with at least relevant and demonstrable Publishing and / or Legal experience 
• Knowledge of the legal information market
• Project management
• Strong influencing and negotiation skills
• Ability to prioritise workload to achieve deadlines 
• Understanding of product area
• Proven experience of developing new products/managing existing products to deliver revenue and profits
• Product development skills of online projects desirable
