Deputy Production Editorial Manager - Books, (Maternity Cover)

 

A leading international academic publisher, has a unique opportunity within their Books Production Department for a Deputy Production Editorial Manager (maternity cover). Based in the Oxford area, this role involves managing the production of new titles from initial typescript through to delivery of final product.

 Key responsibilities will include:

Managing the production of new titles, which involves

  • Commissioning, preparing material for and managing external suppliers
  • Assessing the quality of artwork and sample pages
  • Preparing material for text and cover printers
  • Liaising with authors, commissioning editors, project managers, freelancers, printers and designers
  • Providing authors/suppliers with relevant information and support
  • Controlling schedules, budgets and quality
  • Producing complex production estimates

Providing managerial support:

  • Processing new typescripts handed over by editorial teams, based both in the UK and US
  • Assisting in the training of new members of staff
  • Helping to oversee the development of Production Editors
  • Assisting in the recruitment of new staff members and freelancers
  • Managing in-house freelancers when necessary
  • Developing new ways of working to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Deputising for the Production Editorial Manager. This could involve allocating suppliers, allocating work within the team, acting as a point of contact in the absence of the manager and attending meetings

The successful candidate will have sufficient, demonstrable previous experience of working within a books or journals production editorial environment and will have a good understanding of the pre-press and manufacturing processes. You will have the ability to organise and negotiate and work well under pressure and to deadlines.  Some experience of mentoring and/or supervising staff would be an advantage but not essential.  An aptitude and enthusiasm for working with new technology is essential.
