Haus Publishing and the Armchair Traveller publish history, biography and travelogues, plus a small number of fiction titles, many of them translated. We are looking for a full-time Editor to support the Publisher, working on both the non-fiction and the fiction lists. The position is for an initial 12-month contract based in our Central London offices, with potential to develop into a permanent position.

This is a great opportunity for an ambitious Editor looking for the next step in his or her career. The position will involve both commissioning and management responsibilities, allowing a self-motivated candidate to shape the role to suit his or her strengths and explore new areas that might not have been a part of their previous experience. We are a small independent publisher and expect all members of the team to have a no-job-too-small mentality.

Principal responsibilities will include:

  • -- Editing – structural as well as copy-editing, proofreading, collating changes, preparing manuscripts for typesetting and titles for print.
  • -- Managing – working with freelance editors, proofreaders, indexers and our production team.
  • -- Submissions – managing unsolicited submissions, as well as submissions from foreign publishers and agents, with the potential to
  •    undertake commissioning -esponsibilities to further develop our lists.
  • --Writing copy for book jackets and biannual catalogues

We are looking for a candidate who has an existing interest in the fields of publishing we have made our own over the past 11 years.

Essential skills:

  --Previous editorial experience

  --English native speaker with a high standard of written English

  --Strong interpersonal skills

  --Ability to work to a deadline and within a tight budget

Desirable skills:

  --Foreign languages

  --Formal proofreading qualifications

  --Competency in Microsoft Word and Excel
