Editor, Classics & Heritage - 12 month fixed-term contract (maternity cover)

Salary: competitive.

Faber is a leading independent literary publisher, committed to the world’s most dynamic and significant voices. The current list spans Nobel laureates, bestselling fiction, award-winning non-fiction, poetry, film, classical music and drama. We publish a diverse range of contemporary authors such as Clare Keegan, Anna Burns, Kazuo Ishiguro and Sally Rooney and have an unrivalled archival backlist featuring T. S. Eliot, William Golding, Seamus Heaney, Sylvia Plath and P.D. James.

We are looking for a creative and organised editor to provide maternity cover for Faber's classics and heritage publishing.

The core of this role is the dynamic publication of four rediscovered classics a year in our celebrated Faber Editions series - overseeing text schedules, marshalling champions and working with a prize-winning team to build market-leading campaigns, with potential to acquire in the spirit of the list. You will also drive our vintage seasonal publishing and genre brands, such as Waterstones' 'Thriller of the Month' author Celia Fremlin, to even more commercial success. You will be responsible for the impactful publishing of major estates such as Flannery O'Connor and Samuel Beckett, as well as identifying new opportunities on the wider Faber backlist. And you will have a unique chance to explore Faber's 90-year archive and suggest future ideas, with a special focus on classic crime, translation, hobbies and nature writing.

Key qualities will be a deep knowledge of and passionate interest in literary history; industry experience; and the ability to combine publishing flair with the timely delivery of diverse projects. Experience in Classics publishing and working with estates will be advantageous.

This maternity cover role will report to Publishing Director Angus Cargill. Beginning in August 2024, it will be a full-time position for a fixed term of up to a year, on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of two days in our London office. Interested candidates should submit a full CV and covering letter to the Recruiting Manager at classicseditor@faber.co.uk quoting reference BS.

The deadline for applications is Sunday 26th May.

Faber has a staff of just over 140, based across our offices in Hatton Garden (London) and Harlow. We want all our staff to have the best possible, most positive and enjoyable experience while working at Faber.

Our benefits include:

-        Access to Faber titles (including regular staff book clubs), discounted Independent Alliance titles
