WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are looking for a passionate Editor who believes in our mission of bringing books about art and visual culture to the widest possible audience. You must be as excited by the image as you are by the written word, while being hyper-organised. You will have at least two years of experience in a similar position (please don't apply if you don't), have a serious taste for photography and design and understand how difficult and important it is to communicate to a modern, visually articulate audience.

WHO ARE WE?

Hoxton Mini Press is a young independent publisher based in east London. Our goal is to make art books more affordable and accessible (while still making them beautiful enough that you'll pass them down to your grandchildren). In the past five years, we have received critical acclaim from the likes of Martin Parr, Time magazine, the Guardian and have won multiple awards for design, publishing and production.

We are a very small team who care. We care about each other, we care about the environment and we care deeply about every book we make. You'll need to have excellent attention to detail and a calm, positive and flexible work ethic – even when under pressure. You will be able to work off your own initiative but equally you’ll be willing to be a part of a growing team and be happy to be involved in all aspects of the publishing process. Almost everything we do is shared. Sometimes that includes deciding on a book’s title and print run, sometimes the frustration of trying to fix the printer.

WHAT IS THE ROLE?

You will editorially manage between 10–15 books per year (a mix of both art and lifestyle titles), commissioning writers, where needed, and overseeing the editing and development of all book text as well as contributing to the design and photography processes. You will both copy-edit and proofread books in house, and work with external freelancers as required, as well as writing copy for our website, press releases, AIs and for social media.

KEY DUTIES

  • Overseeing the quality and consistency of all the text for 10–15 titles per year from conception to completion, working closely with the in-house team as well as project-specific freelancers to bring to life high-quality books without any errors and with editorial flair.
  • Writing newsletters, AIs, press releases, catalogue copy and social media posts to promote our books and the brand.
  • Joining all new titles meetings with an opportunity to present new ideas yourself, should you wish.
  • Working with the production controller to make sure all editorial deadlines are met on time.
  • Maintaining and developing the editorial 'voice' of our brand. This means ensuring it is applied consistently across all channels: within books, on social media, in newsletters etc.
  • Keeping up with the photographic/publishing industries via blogs, news, galleries, magazines and other publishers who make competitive titles.
  • Copy-editing (where applicable) and proofreading all text in books before they are sent to print.
  • Researching new freelance writers and editors.

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU NEED?

  • Two years' experience in a similar position within the publishing industry with a good understanding of all aspects of the editorial process, particularly proofreading / copy-editing / managing tone.
  • An understanding of the intimate relationship between word, image and design in illustrated publishing: the ability to work closely and organically with a designer.
  • Experience working with professional writers and editors.
  • A solid understanding of InDesign, Word (and Track Changes) as well as Excel and Google Sheets.
  • Strong organisational qualities, the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time and experience in prioritising under pressure.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work with a wide range of people.
  • An excellent eye for a good turn of phrase, but also for typos and spelling mistakes.
  • Brilliant time management and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • A keen interest in all aspects of visual culture including design, photography and architecture.

(Please note: you must be dog-friendly as we have two lively mini-schnauzers in the office)

INTERVIEWS

There will be two rounds of interviews. The first will be 20 minutes long and will be conducted by Zoom, the date is tbc. The second, should we both wish to proceed, will be longer and you will be expected to complete a short but fairly demanding test on the day to assess your skills and knowledge of all aspects of the editorial process.
