Journals Development Editor - Academic Publishing

 

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced journals publishing professional who is looking to take the next step in their career.

A leading publisher of academic books and journals based in the Oxford area is looking to recruit a switched on and ambitious Journals Development Editor to provide editorial development support and services across a wide range of subject areas within the journals division.

Reporting to the Publishing Manager, this is a varied role that will connect editorial activities with other departments within the company and will support the editorial development of specific journals, plus drive wider journals and process improvement initiatives, while building strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities of the role will include:

The delivery of development support on specific journal titles across all subject areas, working closely with relevant subject teams; Liaising with the Research and Business Intelligence Department to analyse and present appropriate data to support journal development activities; maintain and update the team’s bank of best practice guidelines and templates, collaborating with internal stakeholders as required; set up a programme of topic based editorial development workshops/master classes for colleagues, and evaluate market industry innovations and initiatives, making recommendations for active engagement by the company.  Other duties will involve, presenting on any aspect of journal development and team activities, internally and externally and work with editorial colleagues to advise and assist external partners in the development of their publications, including attending and presenting at editorial board meetings.

This is an excellent role for a journals publishing individual who is a self-starter and who is looking for more responsibility, creativity and autonomy in their next role.  The successful individual will be educated to degree level, have demonstrable and relevant experience from a journals background.  You may be a Senior Editorial Assistant or Managing Editor looking for diversity in your next role, or you may be a Development Editor at the moment looking for a new challenge working across a wide variety of journal subject titles.  We also welcome candidates from a relevant book publishing background, with a knowledge of journal publishing and interested in working with journals. You will a keen interest in publishing processes and ideally some knowledge of journal development.  Strong communication and influencing skills, plus the ability to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders are essential to this role.
