Senior Designer

Pan Macmillan is one of the largest general book publishers in the UK, with imprints including Picador, Bluebird, Pan and Macmillan Children’s Books.

We are looking to recruit two Senior Designers into our innovative, collaborative and award-winning Art & Design department.

Your role:
This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a highly creative, award-winning environment, designing across a diverse list of titles. One of the roles will focus mainly on designing and creating captivating cover artwork concepts, roughs and final visuals for our Middle-Grade and YA books, while the other will focus mainly on our reading group imprint, Mantle.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Commissioning external photographers, illustrators and designers where relevant

  • Handling the creative process from inception to final artwork, while ensuring adherence to budget and deadlines

  • Collaborating with key stakeholders, communicating effectively to align your work with our publishing strategy and routes to market

  • Taking a proactive approach to problem-solving will be invaluable in identifying issues, interpreting feedback and delivering innovative designs

Essential experience and knowledge you’ll need to succeed:

  • Knowledge of print and digital requirements needed for design delivery

  • Strong typographic skills

  • Relevant illustrators’ awareness

  • Demonstrate commercial understanding of genre and market

  • Have passionate awareness of design and media trends

  • Have experience in commissioning external creatives and artwork

  • Have awareness of budgets and publishing schedules associated with projects

  • Be skilful at problem-solving

  • Be proactive and motivated

  • Be able to work successfully in a team

  • Be able to build close and effective working relationships

  • Have excellent communication skills

  • Have the ability to work effectively to tight deadlines

  • Be organised and a multi-tasker

  • Be skilled in Adobe Creative Suite

  • Have experience working within a design studio and/or in publishing

Desirable skills we’d love you to have:

  • Knowledge of the Google for Work suite and Biblio
