Managing Editor (12-month maternity cover position)
The British Ecological Society (BES) is seeking an experienced publishing professional with an interest in ecology to join its publications team.
This is a full-time 12-month maternity cover position based in central London and offers an excellent opportunity for a dynamic individual with considerable experience in journals publishing. Reporting to the Head of Publications, the Managing Editor will have overall responsibility for the running and strategic development of three high-impact journals, managing the budgets and the staff dedicated to those journals.
Core duties will include:
- Driving the strategic development of three of the BES’s key journals
- Collaborating with BES staff to ensure successful promotion of the BES journal portfolio and the Society as a whole
- Representing the journals and Society at relevant meetings, both in the UK and abroad
- Recruiting and managing teams of academic Editors and Associate Editors
- Preparing and managing journal budgets
- Line management of Assistant Editors
- Keeping up-to-date with trends in academic publishing and sharing knowledge with colleagues and other BES stakeholders
- Monitoring journal KPIs and sharing best practice guidance among journal teams
The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent with the ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders. They will have demonstrable experience of working in academic publishing and an excellent command of the English language. A proven interest in ecology is essential and a postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject would be a distinct advantage. They will ideally have some experience in line managing staff and preparing budgets.
