Managing Editor - Humanities

 

A leading international publisher of academic books and journals is looking to recruit an experienced and motivated Managing Editor to join their humanities publishing team.  Based in the Oxford area this role will report to the Publisher and will manage a list of journals in Economics and Finance, steering its future development and evolution..

Key responsibilities will include:

• Managing and developing a list of journals with support from a Publishing Editor
• Building strong relationships with a global group of academic editors and learned society contacts
• Commissioning new titles and new society contracts under guidance from the Publisher
• Ensuring that existing publishing contracts are renewed
• Overseeing the financial well-being of the list of journals
• Realising opportunities for organic growth
• Preparing financial projections and proposals
• Working seamlessly with colleagues in Marketing, Production and other departments
• Making presentations at editorial board meetings
• Representing the company at international conferences
• Dealing with telephone calls, correspondence and routine enquiries

This is an exciting and varied role which involves international travel and frequent contact with high profile academics and learned societies. The successful candidate will ideally be educated to degree level or equivalent and have experience in either a journal or books editorial environment. You should possess sound commercial awareness and knowledge of the academic journals market. You will need to be candidate will need enthusiastic, flexible and have great organisational skills with the ability to meet deadlines. Strong communication and presentation skills are essential, as well as good IT skills, including a sound knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint). Familiarity with the subject areas is an advantage, but is not essential.
