We are looking for an experienced,  skilled, self-motivated, creative and highly-organised Marketing Manager to work in the Fiction Communications department

 

The position will involve –

 

Devising, planning and overseeing marketing campaigns for Fiction and Picador titles, within agreed timelines and to given budgets

 

Devising brand building initiatives and audience growth strategies, particularly around repeat brands

 

Leading on creation of pitches for new acquisitions

 

Being the departmental lead and maintaining strong market awareness in the following categories:

 

  • Women’s fiction
  • Erotic fiction
  • Literary fiction

 

Forging and maintaining relationships with third party partners

 

Managing campaign budgets

 

Overseeing The Window Seat, Pan Macmillan’s women’s fiction and lifestyle site

 

Collaborating creatively with staff across the Communications department, including in Non-fiction, Digital and Children’s, as well as with staff in Sales, Editorial, Art, and Production

 

This is a key role within our organisation and as such we are looking for someone with a proven track record of running campaigns with a communications department of a publishing company. You must be able to work autonomously and be good at prioritising work under pressure. 

 

The ideal candidate will have:

 

Extensive experience of running marketing campaigns in the areas of women’s fiction, erotica and literary fiction

 

Skills in ad-planning across traditional and digital media

 

Creative flair in art direction,  copywriting and campaign planning

 

A strong understanding of the current media and consumer marketplace and changes in the publishing industry

 

An impressive ‘black book’ of talented collaborators, developers and contacts who can help realize ambitious digital innovation

 

High levels of digital literacy and confidence in embracing new technologies

 

Experience of ebook marketing

Key tasks:

CONSUMER MARKETING

Drive sales of key and lead titles across all business areas of Fiction and Picador by working closely with sales, publicity, editorial and digital publishing teams to develop and implement high impact, highly integrated consumer campaigns through successful use of the full marketing and content mix: advertising, digital marketing (involving close liaison with digital teams), sales promotion, social, sponsorship and partnership activation, community outreach and management and PR. This will involve both the ability to proactively leverage promotional activity for niche titles and genres with little financial backing in addition to the driving major titles backed by consumer spend support. Where appropriate campaigns to be planned globally and in liaison with international sister companies.

 

Deliver all agreed marketing initiatives within agreed timelines and to given title budget

 

Responsible for The Window Seat, Pan Macmillan’s women’s fiction and lifestyle site

 

Contribute to pitch planning across the fiction teams to secure new acquisitions and retain repeating authors, and lead on pitches when required.

 

Represent Pan Macmillan at Reading Partners working party meetings

 

 

 

PICADOR AND  FICTION

Special responsibility to the Picador and Fiction publishing teams to champion the lists internally. Attend and contribute to weekly editorial meetings. Read all titles under discussion for acquisition and help assess their market reach and assist with positioning – keep Communications Director for Fiction briefed

 

Devise brand building initiatives (particularly around key repeat brands) , audience growth strategy and develop third party relationships

 

Be the departmental lead on marketing for:

 

  • Women’s fiction
  • Erotic fiction
  • Literary fiction

 

Provide marketing support to the Picador and Fiction teams in the retention of titles and authors and in consumer research projects

 

Ensure relationships, campaign work and commitments to Fiction and Picador teams are also maintained

Attend and contribute to content planning meetings to ensure monthly content is updated for campaign titles and audience initiatives via Gather Content

Qualifications:

  • Degree

Skills/knowledge:

  • An experienced and talented marketeer used to working to deadline and to budget across complex campaign activity with shared objectives.  Targets will vary per activity but will be measurable and will mainly consist of sales targets, chart ambitions and author brand awareness amongst both trade and consumers
  • Ad planning acumen across traditional and digital media
  • Creative flair in art direction, copywriting and campaign planning
  • Understanding of current media and consumer marketplace and changes in the publishing industry
  • High computer literacy and confidence in embracing new technology and opportunities
  • Exceptional interpersonal, presentation and organisational skills

Experience:

  • Extensive publishing campaign management experience, particularly in the areas of women’s fiction, erotic fiction and literary fiction
  • Experience of running ebook marketing campaigns
  • Experience of working with reading groups on promotional activity
