Publisher - Academic Journals

 

We have a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious and experienced journal or book publishing professional from an academic or STM publishing background, to work for this highly successful. Global publishing company on their Biological & food Science  journal list.  Based in the Oxford area and reporting to the Editorial Director, the Publisher will foster the growth of a list of approximately 70-80 journals (a mixture of Society and owned), and will manage an editorial team of three staff.

 

This is a varied and demanding role which involves international travel, and responsibilities of the Publisher will include: leading commissioning bids and building good relationships with a global group of academic editors and learned society contacts; you will manage the members of the editorial team, including 2 Managing Editors and an Editorial Assistant. Essential to this role will be realising opportunities for organic growth and overseeing the financial health of the journal list, including preparing financial projections.  The Publisher will work closely with the Editorial Director on strategic issues, but will also work closely with other colleagues, including, Marketing Production, plus other departments and offices, to achieve timely publication, sales and usage goals.  There will be regular attendance at conferences and meetings, therefore the ability to be able to travel within the UK and abroad is essential.

This is a key appointment within the team, therefore the successful candidate  will be educated to degree level and will have significant experience in academic journal or book publishing.  You will have demonstrable acquisitions experience and experience of managing a list and a small team.  We are looking for a candidate who also has broader skills of financial acumen and relationship building .  The successful person should also be able to demonstrate creative flair and strong communication skills.

 

Familiarity with the subject matter and an awareness of academic editors’ and authors needs within their publishing environment would be an advantage but is not essential.
