Our client, a global academic publisher, requires an experienced Publisher, to work in the company's new Open Access division. Managing a small team of 2 people you will be responsible for building the Open Access division from the ground up. Working with the Publishing Director, STM Journals, and the global editorial team you will drive the OA launch programme for STM journals in areas of strategic focus. The programme will not only enhance the STM list's, but increase their profile within the STM community. You will also be required to develop a small list of key journals in the health sciences.

This is an exciting role to develop a new OA programme with an established publisher.

Key Accountabilities: 

  • Working with the Publishing Director lead the creation of the OA launch and development strategy, maintaining high visibility and attracting key authors.
  • Contribute to the strategic plan and its annual reviews. Launch and develop at least 3 OA titles annually and have oversight of all OA launches across the STM Journals team. Contribute to the development of key recent OA launches.
  • Keep up with industry trends, identifying ongoing risks and opportunities within the open access model.
  • Work with the Publishing Director and the senior editorial team to implement best practice for journal development.
  • Optimise the editorial performance of the list to maximise revenues and profitability.
  • Line manage and develop as necessary two editorial staff in the UK STM editorial team dedicated to supporting research, peer review and launch planning.
  • Liaise with the global STM Journals editorial team on all strategic matters, supporting tenders as necessary.
  • Promote a positive image of the organisation with existing and potential clients.
  • Deliver and promote high standards of relationship management through effective and timely communication and information flow between the organisation and the STM journal boards, owners, contributors, subscribers and other clients.

Skills & Experience: 

  • At least seven years’ STM journals publishing experience, ideally in an editorial commissioning role (marketing background would also be considered). A record of launching new journals will be a distinct advantage.
  • High levels of awareness of developments in the journals industry as well as thorough knowledge of the competition at company and subject area list level.
  • In-depth understanding of open access issues, including models and global policies
  • Ability to maintain a network of external contacts by having an impactful presence outside the immediate working environment
  • Have or develop knowledge of the key figures and trends in the key disciplines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and keen financial awareness are absolute prerequisites in order to deliver the requirements of this post.
  • Aptitude for independent but team-focused working
  • Development and empowerment of direct reports
  • Good IT skills.
