Sales Director

We are an award winning, independent publisher, looking for an experienced, dynamic Sales Director to join the senior management team and take our global print and electronic sales forward. The role is responsible for growing profitable sales by setting and implementing the company’s sales and digital strategy, in consultation with the board, reporting to the Managing Director.

Objectives

Sales

  • Increase profitable sales in the UK, Ireland and all territories excluding the USA, Canada and Australia / NZ.
  • Increase the range of our sales channels, and reduce the reliance on single retailers

Metadata

  • Ensure the distribution of timely and accurate metadata to all our partners

Electronic books

  • Increase the variety of ebook partners, and capitalize on electronic book opportunities

Rights

  • Increase profitable rights sales worldwide

Functions

Staff management

  • Manage the Sales Department

Sales

  • Manage the sales relationship with our UK distributor, ensuring excellent customer service
  • Manage the strategic relationships with our UK, European, and Middle Eastern, Indian and Far East representative teams
  • Work with our Australian and Canadian distributors, as required by the Managing Director
  • Ensure the distribution of sales resources to our distribution partners worldwide, as required
  • in consultation with the Board, generate the annual sales budget
  • generate and analyse sales and returns reports, providing sales intelligence to the company
  • Work strategically with our largest customers for profitable growth and in conjunction with the sales manager, understand the roles of our large and small customers, including our authors, and set terms accordingly
    • ensure large accounts are closely monitored and possible issues identified and addressed
    • build the range of smaller accounts, especially in key specialist markets
  • assess proposals for new titles, as circulated by the acquisitions editors, and set sales expectations and comment on ability to reach market
  • feedback to acquisitions editors regarding new publishing opportunities
  • attend book fairs and conferences as required to carry out duties

Metadata

  • ensure metadata is provided to contacts accurately and on time
  • work with partners to establish and improve metadata relationships, including providing Onix feeds

Electronic books

  • Advise and recommend to the board, and implement, the ebooks strategy, including the management of partner relationships and the ongoing assessment of opportunities
  • Manage existing relationships with ebooks partners
  • Assess new ebooks opportunities
  • Work with the Production Director and Marketing Director(s) to ensure a joined up company approach to ebook creation

Qualities and skills

  • excellent understanding of print sales through traditional channels
  • excellent analytical and reporting ability, using Excel, and a comfort using a range of reporting tools
  • experience working with rep groups and managing staff
  • excellent presentation skills
  • excellent understanding of a range of business models, especially as applied to ebooks

Desirable

  • Educated to degree level
  • At least 4 years experience working with print book sales
  • At least 2 years experience working with ebooks
