Senior Commissioning Editor, Academic Journals, Oxfordshire

A highly successful Oxford-based academic publishing house is looking to recruit a Senior Commissioning Editor to manage their portfolio of journals in the humanities and education in order to increase sales and profitability and lead the publishing team across this portfolio. A large proportion of these journals are society owned and the Senior Commissioning Editor will be responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with these clients as well as working on new business opportunities for this market.

 

Key responsibilities will include: * commissioning and developing journals across a range of subject areas in education and humanities; * shaping the strategic direction of the list in order to grow sales; * assessing proposals and researching markets and competition as required; * working on new business opportunities in order to enhance overall society service, including CPD programmes; * visiting institutions and attending meetings and conferences in order to maintain and develop a network of authors and advisers and * developing new product proposals through to journal launch based on market needs. This position would also involve management of two staff members.

 

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent, and have solid commissioning and list management experience, preferably in academic journal publishing. The ability to demonstrate commercial awareness is essential, and subject knowledge of the humanities and/or education and an understanding of journals within this market would be highly desirable. Candidates will need strong communication and negotiation skills and feel comfortable building relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
