SENIOR COMMISSIONING EDITOR / EDITORIAL DIRECTOR – CHILDREN’S FICTION

Simon & Schuster Children’s UK is one of the leading children’s publishers in the UK, dedicated to immersing children of all ages in diverse and creative reading experiences, encouraging a lifelong love of reading and has a record of continuously strong sales and many prestigious awards. It was founded in 1998, and since then has published numerous high quality and bestselling titles and series. We are the proud publishers of global superstars Cassandra Clare and Rachel Renée Russell, home-grown bestsellers such as Ben Miller, Michelle Harrison, Abi Elphinstone and Sue Hendra & Paul Linnet, and rising stars including Nadia Shireen, Danielle Jawando and Jenni Spangler. Simon & Schuster has been shortlisted and highly commended for Children’s Publisher of the Year in the Bookseller Industry Awards.

Job Profile:

We are looking for an Editorial Director or Senior Commissioning Editor to join our dynamic and growing fiction team. In the role, you’ll help us in our mission to seek out and acquire the most exciting and distinctive talent, thinking outside the box and beyond the traditional channels, and to publish and champion books and authors with a clear vision, creatively, commercially and profitably.

The Role:

Reporting to the Publishing Director, you’ll work across the fiction list from young fiction to the hottest YA, with an impressive roster of established Simon & Schuster authors as well as commissioning new voices, plus acquiring strategically for our boutique non-fiction list. You’ll drive projects from acquisition, through the editorial process taking books from manuscript to publication and beyond, liaising closely with design, sales, marketing, PR and production teams, and with author/illustrator care and the child reader front of mind. You’ll nurture strong relationships with agents, authors and partners. And you’ll support the Publishing Director in developing and delivering the publishing strategy.

The Candidate Profile:

We are keen to hear from the widest range of candidates and we’re open to different types of experience. If you have experience in commissioning, editing and publishing commercially successful books, we’d love to hear from you, but it’s not essential that you have worked specifically in children’s fiction publishing. You must be driven, ambitious, and passionate about children’s books, and have a strong instinct for the next big thing.

We have big plans for our children’s list: we’re at the start of an exciting new phase of growth, and we’d love you to be part of that.
