Senior Editor/Editorial Director

Atlantic Books, a leading independent UK publisher, and subsidiary of Allen and Unwin, the premier Australian independent publisher seeks a senior editor/editorial director with an interest in commissioning and acquiring quality non-fiction for the Atlantic imprint. This is an increasingly rare and exciting opportunity and is likely to suit someone with similar independent publishing experience, or someone from a corporate house keen to try the world of independent publishing.

Reporting to the Publishing Director, your duties will be primarily but not necessarily limited to the following:

• Working alongside the Publisher and Publishing Director, to play a key role in the shaping of the Atlantic imprint’s non-fiction publishing programme, for 2016 and beyond, consolidating Atlantic’s reputation for quality non-fiction and working to establish a core stable of authors. 

• To commission a select number of high quality new titles – approximately 5-10 per annum –  with a primary focus on non-fiction.

• To commission in a creative and expansive way, coming up with ideas and approaching authors, exploring new publishing opportunities, including the possibility of publishing partnerships with magazines or institutions. 

• To maintain and develop excellent and lasting relationships with authors, agent and overseas publishers.

• To ensure, alongside the Publishing Director, that the Atlantic imprint maintains the highest editorial standards, working closely with authors on the edits of titles acquired, and overseeing the publishing of those titles. 

• To liaise with other departments of Atlantic Books – Production, Sales & Marketing, Publicity, Finance, Rights – to ensure that the respective needs of these departments are met in a timely and cost effective manner, and that good relations are maintained.

• On titles acquired, writing copy for covers, advanced information sheets, catalogues, briefing the Art Director on jackets.
