Description:

Simon & Schuster UK publishes a wide mix of literary and commercial non-fiction and fiction, digital originals and audio books, and is one of the UK’s premier publishers. We publish Sunday Times bestsellers, Pulitzer Prize-winners, BBC R4 ‘Book of the Week’ selections and book industry award-winners. Our non-fiction stable includes both British and international writers such as Simon Schama,  John Nichol, Laura Bates, Rupi Kaur, Hillary Clinton, Bob Woodward and Bruce Springsteen.

Job Profile:

We are looking to recruit a skilled and talented individual with a sharp eye for detail to work alongside our non-fiction editors, supporting books through the editorial process. This is a six month fixed term contract for an individual with previous desk editing experience.

Your Role:

Reporting to the Publishing Director, Non-fiction, the role involves close involvement in  manuscripts and jackets for a wide range of titles commissioned by the Non-fiction team. Working alongside the editorial team in-house, you will take a complete manuscript through all stages of the editing process as it heads towards the finished copy. You will liaise with authors and the production and design departments to ensure that the assigned project is delivered within deadlines. You will check the jacket copy for the book at each stage of circulation. You will work closely with outside copyeditors and proofreaders, to ensure document quality, clarity and consistency following the company style guide and that production deadlines are adhered to.   You will work with indexers, where required, and work alongside authors to select and caption plate sections and maps, where required.  You will liaise, when necessary, with the company’s elected libel lawyers and work alongside the commissioning editor with authors to implement any recommendations.

The Candidate’s Profile:

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, a meticulous eye for detail and an ability to interact at all levels.  Strong IT skills and intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel, together with excellent ability to project-manage a highly commercial list of titles, is a must for this role. The ability to multi-task, keep a cool head and have a razor-sharp eye is essential.  A knowledge of the general non-fiction market is key.
