Head of Journal Development

Do you have extensive journal development and commissioning experience? Are you looking to lead the strategy and editorial team of a scientific publisher? This Head of Journal Development role might be the opportunity you are looking for. Based in central London, you will join the friendly team of a scientific society and play a crucial part in raising the profile of its journals.

Key duties:

  • Lead strategic development and growth of journals, in an innovative and community-focussed way
  • Ensure editorial strategy responds to market developments and emerging opportunities and threats
  • Line-manage editorial team, providing guidance and setting targets
  • Create annual editorial budgets and financial forecasts
  • Work with team to provide top service to society members and demonstrate the benefits of journal
  • Oversee journal promotional plans, working with marketing team to maximise results
  • Monitor journals compliance with industry best practice and ethical policies

Experience / skills required:

  • Extensive journal development and commissioning experience within STM publishing is essential
  • Current knowledge of academic publishing including open access
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills
  • Line-management experience is desirable
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn and adapt to change
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a scientific subject
