Temp Senior Journal Development Editor

If you have experience in managing academic journals, an understanding of open access publishing and experience in an environment related subject, this is an exciting role for you! You will join a leading academic publisher in London for 6-8 months and assist the Journals Manager and Editor-in-Chief to recruit an international editorial board and assist with commissioning of articles and recruitment of peer reviewers.

Key duties:

  • Research and identify potential editorial board members, through desk research, academic networks and conference attendance
  • Invite potential board members to be on the board, communicating the roles and responsibilities of their membership
  • Maintain records of individuals who have been approached in order to produce reports
  • Approach the same individuals to invite them to submit articles for the journal or to act as peer reviewers
  • Coordinate the board membership to arrange meeting schedules and processes for governance, advocacy and decision-making
  • Harness the expertise and networks of new board members to ensure they are commissioning articles and assisting with further recruitment of board members and peer reviewers
  • Represent at conferences, network, improve market knowledge and receive feedback on the journal
  • Assist the Journals Manager in other project related tasks and undertake recruitment to agreed targets

Experience / skills required:

  • Extensive experience of managing academic journals and journal editorial boards
  • Experience of and qualifications in an environment-related subject
  • Solid understanding of issues and trends in open access publishing, the peer review process, evaluation methods and journal content-generation strategies
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships with journal editors and authors
  • Demonstrable journal development skills, including strategic planning and improvement strategies
  • Strong Microsoft skills (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
