The opportunity
We are looking for an Assistant Editor on a one-year temporary contract to work on the adult trade illustrated non-fiction list, which covers various lifestyle subjects including cookery, gardening, natural history, humour and the occasional graphic novel. This is an opportunity to build on your publishing experience in a unique environment: the successful candidate will gain specialist skills ranging from editorial to design as well as working with a stellar list of established and up-and-coming authors. These include Tom Kerridge, Niki Segnit, Heston Blumenthal, Yasmin Khan and Olia Hercules, among others.
The role
- Project managing a number of books each season
- Providing editorial support for all titles on the list
- Commissioning and overseeing freelancers
- Organising photoshoots
- Liaising directly with high-profile authors
- Administrative support across the department
- Working with and updating a variety of systems, including Biblio 3
- Writing AI and cover copy
- Extracting material from electronic book design files for press and marketing purposes
- Supplying files to Production for the colour-proofing of images
- Carrying out editorial checks on reprinting titles, and providing corrected material
- Managing digital publishing workflow
- Processing contracts for authors and freelancers
- Clearing text and image permissions
- Processing invoices
Skills, knowledge, experience
- 12 to 18 months of editorial experience
- Well-organised and hard-working
- Meticulous and efficient, with attention to detail
- Good IT skills
- Flexible approach, with an ability to prioritise effectively
