Content Developer, Digital Development

The Opportunity

Bloomsbury Publishing is looking for an experienced Content Developer. The candidate will manage the storage, quality assurance, processing and delivery of XML content, its ancillary assets and metadata, for use across a range of Bloomsbury’s product websites, from initial receipt of digital content through to online delivery of high-quality and cost-efficient products. This role must build upon, complement and integrate with existing digital and print production processes, while contributing to the innovation of digital workflow processes to develop and streamline the production of Bloomsbury’s product websites.

The Role

  • Manage the Digital QA team, ensuring that content and metadata are effectively and efficiently managed and delivered in line with business need.
  • Monitor, in liaison with the Content Architect, the validation technologies used, to ensure that they enforce markup consistent with the company’s content strategy.
  • Manage relationships and lines of communication with the wide range of internal and external colleagues and suppliers necessary to deliver products.
  • Work with digital and editorial production colleagues to ensure that content creation and product delivery requirements and digital production best practices are captured, communicated and applied.
  • Ensure that bibliographical conventions are adhered to, to meet content management and delivery requirements (ie eISBNs, DOIs, unique IDs, etc).
  • Ensure that content (textual and non-textual) and metadata are produced and delivered in line with the requirements of the CMS, and maintain and review workflow systems to maximise compatibility with the CMS.
  • Manage ticketing systems to ensure that all content and metadata faults are identified and rectified in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
  • Monitor and maintain QA procedures and standards (visual and automated) to ensure supplier delivery of accurate and useable content and metadata.
  • Maintain an active interest in developments in markup technologies, to ensure that content/metadata management processes are up-to-date and fit for purpose.
  • Contribute actively to the enhancement and growth of Digital QA team’s skillset, to ensure they are able to support and maintain production processes.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a publishing production setting (mandatory)
  • Firm professional knowledge of XML and its function in delivering publishing products, and familiarity with schemas and the structure of complex XML documents.
  • Experience of using and maintaining a management system to store XML
  • Excellent grasp of and proven track record in editorial and digital processes and control.
  • Keen attention to detail and focus on accuracy in both project and editorial control.
  • A logical and analytical approach to content/metadata validation and management.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to manage relationships with colleagues and suppliers at all levels.
  • Excellent time management skills and experience of working to tight deadlines.
  • Flexible, proactive approach, and the ability to work unsupervised, and manage own workload and priorities.
  • Willingness to work on a range of different projects and products and to learn and apply developing technologies.
  • Line management experience (preferred)

Technical skills:

Highly desirable:

  • XQuery
  • XSLT

Desirable:

  • Schematron, RELAX NG, XSD, DTD
  • XProc/Ant or other suitable batch processing and pipelining tools
  • A scripting language, such as Python
  • Experience of source code version control systems, such as Git
