Executive Editor – Children’s Non-Fiction (Maternity Cover)

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity for someone with a passion for children’s non-fiction and editorial to join our global award-winning publishing house as an Executive Editor on a maternity cover contract.

You will have a proven track record of making brilliant books that show creativity and editorial rigour and enjoy managing projects from concept through to final files, running schedules and budgets. This role will give the ideal candidate the opportunity to work closely with authors, illustrators and agents and to work as a leader in our dedicated non-fiction team, supporting the development of editorial colleagues and working closely with Design and Production to maintain Bloomsbury’s high standards.

The Role

Editorial

  • Researching content, developing synopses and meeting with authors, as required.  Maintaining a collaborative relationship with authors throughout the life of a project, with effective feedback and communication
  • Ensuring the text is first class, entertaining, language levels are correct, intended audience is reached
  • Writing and re-writing manuscripts, directing the style, content and direction of the text as it is cut, read and proofed
  • Collaborating with design and illustrators to finalise the pages of each book
  • Mentoring the editorial team as they develop their skills
  • Working with the editors to ensure proper briefing to design and production, copy-editing and proofreading
  • Editing/re-writing/checking back cover copy, advance information for titles and catalogue copy
  • Working closely with the publishing director

Design & Illustrators

  • Briefing layouts and covers, running regular meetings throughout the life of a project
  • Working with design to manage illustrators and illustrator briefing

Marketing & Publicity

  • Re-writing, editing, checking and writing quotes for marketing and publicity materials

Production

  • Working closely with production to ensure keen pricing for and excellent quality control of final printed copies

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Robust editorial experience essential
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Solid experience of managing projects
  • Proven track record of making brilliant books and comfortable with the whole publishing lifecycle
  • Comfortable in a leadership role, supporting and developing editorial colleagues
  • Superb communication and team working skills

This role is based at Bloomsbury’s London office, 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP; it is offered on a fixed term maternity cover contract for a minimum of 9 months and can be either a part-time or full-time role, starting at the end of July.
