Managing Editor, Bloomsbury Children’s Books

The opportunity
A rare opportunity for a highly organised, meticulous and methodical Editor to join the talented, editorial team of Bloomsbury Children’s Books. This important role will manage the final editorial stages of the award-winning children’s list, from young illustrated fiction to YA novels, working as a central figure between editorial, design and production to deliver titles that meet their critical path dates and are edited to the highest standard. 

The role
Key responsibilities include:
•    Managing the editorial process from handover by the commissioning editor through to final PDFs to production
•    Line managing desk editor jointly with the Harry Potter editor (a split report)
•    Ensuring files go to production on schedule and within budget
•    Managing and training a team of freelancers in Bloomsbury house style, giving feedback
•    Overseeing desk editor, training assistants and junior editors in editorial processes and checks, monitoring standard of work
•    Liaising with the commissioning editors, copyeditor and author and collating comments
•    Maintaining schedules in Biblio and ensuring that critical path dates are achieved
•    Checking proof corrections, illustration positioning, checking digital files
•    Managing a small freelance budget
•    Briefing titles to production
•    Seeking efficient processes at every stage – identifying opportunities for improvement

Skills, knowledge and experience
•    Substantial experience in an editorial role, preferably in children’s or educational publishing
•    Excellent copy-editing and proofreading skills
•    A leader for the department on house style and editorial standards
•    Highly organised, methodical – a calm, capable and experienced project manager
•    Understands both colour and mono production processes and has experience of highly integrated titles
•    Knowledge of typesetting and typography and an eye for design
•    Able to anticipate and solve problems, working as a team
•    Excellent attention to detail – in text, design and illustrations
•    Sensitive, diplomatic and an excellent communicator 
•    Works well under pressure, managing multiple projects with strict deadlines
