Commercial Director

SALARY SCALE: Competitive, depending on experience

JOB PURPOSE: To drive, develop and implement the commercial strategies of Granta Publications, one of Britain’s foremost independent publishers, in a senior management role.

We are seeking a Commercial Director to drive the commercial operations of Granta Books and Granta Magazine and to identify commercial opportunities that fulfil the editorial vision of the company.  The successful candidate will combine an empathy for Granta’s literary ethos, history and publishing vision with commercial acumen and innovation.

The Commercial Director will have responsibility for the sales, publicity and marketing departments, will sit on the Management Board, and will report to the Publishing Director.

We are looking for a creative strategist with an entrepreneurial mindset, leadership skills, management experience, and a collaborative approach. The role requires  excellent organizational and interpersonal abilities and outstanding communication skills.

The ideal candidate with have an impressive track record of success in sales and/or marketing and a deep understanding of the book market. The Commercial Director will engage in long and short-term planning and must be equally comfortable driving both broader company strategy and campaigns for individual books and magazine issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Innovate, recommend and implement commercial strategies for both Granta Books and Granta magazine.
  • Manage the sales, publicity and marketing departments.
  • Contribute to oversight of the business as a member of the senior management team.
  • Oversee, analyse, develop and manage key commercial relationships.
  • Develop strong relationships with the Independent Alliance and Faber sales team.
  • Drive and implement audio strategy.
  • Drive and implement internal systems strategy (Biblio).
  • Set and report on commercial targets.
  • Lead campaigns team and oversee publicity, marketing and sales campaigns for all titles.
  • Oversee identification of focus titles and attendant publicity, marketing and sales strategies.
  • With Publishing Director, lead sales conferences.
  • Assist in setting financial targets, budget development and monitoring.
  • Monitor performance of commercial activities using key metrics and prepare reports for senior management.
  • Explore synergies between the international editions of Granta magazine and the UK editions; develop strategies for Granta in the US.
  • Oversee terms negotiations.
  • Oversee print run, reprint and pricing strategies and decisions.
  • Support Publishing Director in acquisitions strategy.
