Headline is seeking an experienced publisher to head up a new list to feature – among other subject areas – Politics, History and Ideas. We are interested in talking to people from all walks of publishing – from the trade houses of London to regional centres of excellence and expertise.

Who we are and what we do

Headline was founded in 1986 with a single promise at its heart: to publish the books people want to read. Sometimes, the simplest ideas are best.

Headline has spent over three decades creating bestsellers and our passion for the commercial means we are home to some of the UK’s biggest-selling authors and continue to invest in new talent with stellar sales potential. The non-fiction team publishers a host of bestselling authors including Bryony Gordon, Sinclair McKay, Rhik Samadder and James Acaster with books coming this autumn from Ben Stokes, Warren Gatland, the BBC Reith Lectures, Flea of the RHCP and the Downton Abbey team, amongst others. We are a close-knit, ambitious team with a reputation for outstanding author care and a mission to make our list as profitable as possible.

As part of a new phase of growth, we are looking to extend our portfolio into new areas and are keen to hear what you think we could amplify.

What you will be doing

You will be in responsible for building a new list of titles from the ground up with books that will have international potential and bring a touch of gravitas to the Headline list, commissioning into the more serious non-fiction genres which are performing so strongly in today’s market. You might want to spend your first 100 days hunting down the next Factfulness, or perhaps you’ll be signing up a political voice who can help us make sense of the dizzying political landscape in which we find ourselves, or maybe you have a big idea for a Big Ideas book and you’ll be making it your quest to pair it with the perfect new author. The strategy for the list will be in your hands.

You will be reporting directly into the Non-fiction Publishing Director and, for the right candidate, there is the potential for management opportunities. We are looking for someone who can make a tangible impact to our non-fiction publishing as a whole, adding breadth and depth to our list. The job title will be shaped around the right person for the job.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a publisher who is excited by profit, has an impeccable network of contacts, and is capable of generating ideas of their own as well as attracting the very best agent submissions. Specific genre expertise is essential.
