Development Editor

Development Editor (2-year fixed term contract)
Salary in the range of £32,000-£35,000
Based in London, Euston with a move to Kings Cross in early summer 2018

The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) seeks to recruit an experienced Development Editor to help drive the success of a new general/non-academic publishing programme. This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate with a background related to Islamic studies to work closely with colleagues and authors in developing and producing high-quality books for both the trade market and the Ismaili community. The role entails editorial work on a range of projects on topics concerning the Muslim world broadly, as well as the Ismailis in particular, primarily for print books but also for digital/online formats.

About Us:
The Institute of Ismaili Studies was established in 1977 with the object of promoting scholarship and learning of Muslim cultures and societies, historical as well as contemporary, and a better understanding of their relationship with other societies and faiths. Our publishing and postgraduate study programmes encourage a perspective that is not confined to the theological and religious heritage of Islam, but that seeks to explore the relationship of religious ideas to broader dimensions of society and culture. We thus encourage an interdisciplinary approach to the materials of Islamic history and thought.

About you:
You will have proven editorial and writing experience, preferably in trade non-fiction, journalism, or the higher education market, with the ability to look at a manuscript critically and creatively. At different stages, you will be required to outline, rewrite, line-edit, and proofread text to ensure that it is appropriate to the readership whilst fulfilling stakeholder objectives. You will be an excellent and sensitive communicator, both orally and in writing, who is able to prioritise tasks effectively for various projects. All candidates will be required to take an editing test.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrable editorial, writing and all-round communication skills
  • Humanities degree, with knowledge of and interest in Islamic civilisations
  • An ability to communicate complex and dry concepts in clear and compelling English that will appeal to both Muslim and non-Muslim readerships
  • Strong research and organisation skills

Due to UK Immigration regulations we can only accept applications from candidates who have a legal right to work in the UK.

Please apply online with CV and covering letter at www.iis.ac.uk (Job Vacancies link), where you can also download the job description and person specification.

If you have any queries, please email Steve Lewitt in Human Resources: slewitt@iis.ac.uk . The closing date for applications is Friday 17 November.
