Basic Books, America’s pre-eminent publisher of award-winning non-fiction, is opening an office in London in 2020. Basic Books UK will be an imprint of John Murray Press – Hachette UK’s serious and specialist non-fiction division.
We are looking for an experienced commissioner to lead this exciting new list. You will be comfortable working with leading intellectuals, scholars and journalists on both sides of the Atlantic and feel confident working across disciplines.
They will report to Nick Davies, Managing Director of John Murray Press, but collaborate with Lara Heimert, Publisher at Basic Books US, and her editorial colleagues in New York.
This is a unique opportunity to build a serious non-fiction list with one of the most respected brands in American publishing and the support of one of the most successful publishing divisions in the UK.

John Murray Press is a division of Hachette UK. It was founded in January 2013 and has grown rapidly since then. It’s imprints are: John Murray, who were crowned Imprint of the Year at the British Book Awards in 2017; Two Roads, who were shortlisted for Imprint of the Year at the British Book Awards in 2019; Hodder Faith, who won Publisher of the Year at the Christian Resources Festival in 2018; Nicholas Brealey Books, which joined the division in 2016; John Murray Learning (which includes the Chambers and Brewer’s reference brands, Teach Yourself, Michel Thomas and Sheldon Press); and Jessica Kingsley Publishers, which joined the Hachette group in 2017 and was shortlisted for Academic & Professional Publisher of the Year at the British Book Awards in 2019.
