Publishing Director STM

Our client, a leading, global, academic publisher requires a Publishing Director to manage a £30M STM portfolio.  

The Publishing Director will lead and develop the global STM journals publishing programme and to inform and fulfil the Academic strategic plan ambitions for STM journals growth and profitability.

Through close contact with the market, relevant subject communities and key external influencers, the role-holder will be responsible for ensuring the STM journals list maintains and grows its market share. This role will identify new opportunities globally, and enhance our profile as a STM journals publisher and partner, within the context of our position as a leading STM publisher.

This role will lead and manage the STM journals editorial team across Journals, Books and Open Access and will have the senior publishing team reporting in directly. It will also need to work collaboratively across all other functions to deliver a growing programme of high-quality content and innovative services, responding to trends, needs and technological innovations.

Skills & Experience: 

  • Educated to degree level.
  • Minimum of ten years experience in STM journals editorial, ideally with the majority of this time in a middle/senior management role.
  • Profound knowledge of the STM journals market in both North America and Europe is required, ideally with good connections within both the academic community and the Journals publisher community.
  • Experience of driving content development and acquisition in Asia is desirable.
  • Relationship management skills and the authority to achieve the widest-possible buy-in to plans and influence existing and potential external partners.
  • Proven experience of being creative and innovative in the STM journals arena across content and services, with a clear vision of how the journals programme of a University Press can develop; able to think creatively in terms of original concepts as well as build on others’ ideas.
  • Experience of developing successful content launches and approaches to market that clearly demonstrate success over market conditions and competitor performance.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills, to operate at all levels with internal and external partners and customers; able clearly to present market needs and publishing solutions to internal and external customers.
  • Organisational skill to plan and manage resource allocation and budgets to agreed plans, reporting and acting according to changing circumstances.
  • Financial and business skills to manage profitability, and ability to negotiate internally and externally:
  • Full familiarity with budgeting and cost-control processes in relation to specific projects and lists
  • Understanding of the financial implications of decisions within the overall organisational framework.
