Macmillan Publishers International Limited (MPIL) is looking for a new Head of Legal to be located in London.  The new Head of Legal will head a team of three lawyers that has responsibility for the legal work for MPIL and its three operating divisions – Pan Macmillan, MDL, and Priddy Books – as well as its overseas subsidiaries in South Africa and India.  This person will report to the General Counsel of Macmillan Publishers in the US.

The role will include providing sophisticated legal and practical advice on publishing issues, including both pre-publication and in response to disputes, and reviewing, drafting, negotiating, and advising on a wide range of commercial, technology, and publishing contracts.  It will also involve working side-by-side with, and advising, senior management, collaborating with the Holtzbrinck in-house legal team in Germany and the Macmillan Publishers legal team in New York, overseeing the work of external counsel, and managing the two other lawyers in the MPIL legal department.

We are looking for a senior publishing lawyer, with a minimum of 8 years PQE or equivalent; previous senior in-house experience is strongly preferred.  The successful Head of Legal will need superior communication, drafting, negotiation, project management, workload management, and people management skills.  A strong understanding of intellectual property is also required.  Candidates must be qualified as a solicitor or Barrister in England and Wales and be a member of the Law Society or Bar Council with a current practicing certificate.

A four-day per week schedule may be possible.

This role will be based in our offices in Farringdon.
