Nicolai Verlag, one of Germany’s oldest publishing houses, was founded in 1713 in Berlin and stands for the era of Enlightenment. An era that established the foundation of today’s progressive society in science, politics and culture.  Friedrich Nicolai’s heritage inspires the very same values we have today: freedom of thought, rational inquiry, critical thinking, and the breaking down of borders. These 18th century challenges and values are more than ever essential to our advancement in the 21st.

 

Today, the newly re-established publishing house Nicolai is on a mission. We will revive the heritage of Friedrich Nicolai by uniting and cultivating the world’s most preeminent thinkers to discuss and challenge their perspectives. Nicolai publishing will become nothing less than an important point of interaction for decision makers and researchers alike. Our goal is to continuously find reliable answers to the most challenging questions of our time.

We are looking for a high energy, innovative thinker with a strong can-do mentality who will take an active role in expanding the editorial vision of Nicolai Publishing. Based in Berlin, you will work in close cooperation with the owner Christiane zu Salm in one of the most innovative publishing houses in Germany in the role of 

 

Publishing Programme Director / German Speaking

 

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  •  Plan, manage and execute on overall strategy and daily operations
  •  Manage the new publishing programme which includes: Identifying topics and authors, cultivating author relationships, creating a network of free lectors and influencers
  •  Develop a first class process and ensure timely release of publication products
  •  Introduce and represent Nicolai Publishing at relevant institutions and establishing strong, enduring relationships
  •  Lead and coordinate sales and marketing activities

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A degree in humanities or social sciences, post graduate degree preferred
  • An innovative thinker who can tap into current trends (or create them) and identify new markets
  • Extensive publishing experience working with authors, defining topics and building author relationships as well as managing the whole publication process
  • A proven track record of turning ideas into books
  • Excellent people management skills and a first-rate communicator
  • Good commercial and financial understanding
  • Fluent in English and German

Most importantly, you should have the drive, energy and enthusiasm to build something meaningful and lasting from the ground up. You should be a person capable of challenging consolidated habits and someone who can transform a void into an opportunity.
