Senior Clinical Editor – PLOS Medicine
PLOS Medicine (www.plosmedicine.org), the leading open-access general medical journal published by Public Library of Science (www.plos.org) is seeking an experienced editor with a strong background in clinical care and research. In this senior role, you will join an experienced editorial team in providing leadership for the research section of the journal. This full-time position may be based in either our San Francisco, USA or Cambridge, UK office.
As our senior clinical editor, you will lead the recruitment, peer review and publication of clinical research in PLOS Medicine. Reporting to the journal’s chief editor and interacting regularly with leading researchers on the journal’s editorial board, you will serve as liaison to the clinical research community. Maintaining awareness of current issues in medical care both in high-income settings and globally you will play a key role in expanding the journal’s scope and relevance in clinical research on the leading challenges to human health worldwide.
Opportunities and Responsibilities
- Contribute to the vision for the journal’s clinical priority topics and execute plans to attract high quality manuscript submissions in these areas
- Establish and implement standards across the editorial team to ensure transparent reporting and publication quality of clinical research
- Engage in outreach to establish the journal as a venue of choice in priority research communities
- Work closely with publications services team to ensure engaged, efficient and constructive author service
- Handle a substantial portion of clinical research manuscripts submitted for publication, from pre-submission inquiries through peer review and post-publication stages
- Write and commission editorials, blog entries and news coverage and collaborate with marketing and media teams to highlight the journal’s clinical content
Qualifications and Experience must include
- MD or equivalent medical degree with several years of relevant post qualification experience (MRCP or equivalent in UK / Board-certified or board-eligible in US). MD+PhD with postdoctoral research experience in a relevant clinical field desirable.
- One or more years’ editorial experience, ideally at a general medical journal, including peer review of research manuscripts.
- Exemplary attention to detail in manuscript evaluation and communication of editorial decisions
- Broad medical knowledge and familiarity with outstanding researchers and potential reviewers in PLOS Medicine’s scope
- Energetic interest in medical research and its communication
- Enthusiasm for editorial teamwork and for networking and outreach, including travel, to engage leading researchers and research communities
