The Higher Education division of Macmillan Education publishes, markets and sells core adoptable textbooks globally. Under our Palgrave imprint we have the most successful politics list in UK publishing, with our titles and authors recognised, respected and adopted around the world.

As well as the Palgrave imprint, our division also markets and sells books for the US publisher Macmillan Learning, and publishes for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the British Film Institute. Macmillan Education has operations in London, New York, Shanghai and Melbourne.

Under new leadership, the Higher Education division has been repositioned for growth and the division had an excellent 2016. We have a very ambitious mid-term plan, for which we will be commissioning the best core adoptable textbooks to be sold via the adoption model on campus worldwide.

We are seeking an experienced and highly talented Editor with demonstrable success in commissioning successful core adoptable textbooks in print and through digital provision to join our team at a senior level.

The ideal applicant for this role will:

  • have an outstanding track record in developing commercially successful and innovative core adoptable products that stand-out in a competitive marketplace;
  • be determinedly market-focused, with a passion for identifying emerging trends on Higher Education courses and an enthusiasm to explore new publishing opportunities both in print and digital formats;
  • have extensive experience of working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels of the organisation, and of building strong relationships with external contacts;
  • possess strong negotiation skills and an ability to influence and persuade key stakeholders in order deliver on agreed publishing plans;
  • need to show proven ability to determine and articulate future publishing direction as well as execute their plan
  • preferably have subject experience

This is a rare opportunity to build this list through new commissioning as well as to deliver new editions of some of the most prestigious and successful textbooks in Higher Education publishing.  The position will be based in our central London offices (in King’s Cross) and will be at Publisher or Senior Commissioning Editor level depending on experience.  Extensive university campus travel will be required in the UK and overseas, along with key conference attendance.

We offer 25 days holiday a year, career development and training, a competitive salary, season ticket loans, private healthcare, a contributory pension scheme, employee assistance program, discounts on gym memberships and a range of other benefits.  For more information about the Macmillan group click here to visit our website.
