This is an exciting opportunity for a Publishing Assistant to join the successful and dynamic team at Macmillan Children’s Books, providing administrative support for the Rights Director and the Associate Publisher. It is a new role with a wide remit and will offer an excellent opportunity to learn about all areas of publishing.  

The Rights Department is responsible for the sale of co-edition and subsidiary rights for the Macmillan Children’s Books, Two Hoots, Campbell and Kingfisher imprints around the world. Our lists include award-winning picture books, novelty titles, non-fiction and fiction books. 

The Associate Publisher supports many cross-departmental projects across all of the MCB lists. Developing and working closely with consumer partnerships, licensing stakeholders, as well as industry organisations and charities, the role also includes works closely with the publishing team on Macmillan’s heritage publishing opportunities, including Alice in Wonderland. 

Key duties:

  • Supporting both Directors with diary management, taking minutes at selected MCB meetings, creating agendas, booking rooms, organising catering as required

  • Participation in the MCB assistant team meeting and general MCB divisional shared projects

  • Attending and participating in the Rights Team Meeting

  • Helping to assemble the Rights Guide for the Book fairs and supporting schedules for the team

  • Raising contracts and invoices, including coding invoices and working with our Biblio system

  • Creating sales material and updating sales tools

  • Supporting the Associate Publisher with administration for organisations, partnerships, licensing and other stakeholder relationships

  • Being the point of contact for selected licensing and brand partnerships – including stage plays 

  • Supporting the marketing and publicity approvals for licensing, including Dear Zoo merchandise, Alice in Wonderland and international publishers    

  • Supporting the MCB Corporate PR and CSR initiatives, including managing the announcement schedule and drafting press releases

Experience / skills required:

  • Knowledge / experience of Publishing, ideally Rights and/or Permissions

  • Desire to work in a major children’s books publishing company

  • Highly computer literate, with particularly strong skills in MS Office. Knowledge of Biblio is desirable 

  • Able to demonstrate excellent written, verbal and numerical skills 

  • Able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills within a busy environment, particularly managing and prioritising own workload

  • Able to work on own initiative as well as part of a team 

  • Problem solving skills 

  • Knowledge of a foreign language desirable 

  • Experience of working in a similar environment / office work experience essential
