Position Purpose

An exciting opportunity has arisen to provide day-to-day assistance to the creative team behind two award-winning imprints: Wide Eyed Editions and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books. This is an entry-level position that will offer the successful candidate the chance to learn editorial and administrative skills in a busy and dynamic office environment. Books published by our team include the best-selling Little People, Big Dreams series; Young, Gifted and Black; the Atlas of Adventures series; The Bear and the Piano by David Litchfield and The Story Orchestra series.

Key Results Areas

Provide editorial assistance to the team as required, ensuring our books are published to a high standard of accuracy. 

  1. Proofread final layouts and mark up amends as required using standard proofreading symbols.
  2. Take in amends to copy using Indesign.
  3. Fact-check non-fiction books.
  4. Undertake picture research or any other kind of research for relevant titles.
  5. Work with the Publisher to create the picture-book paperback programme.
  6. Management of administrative systems.
  7. Administer the sending out and filing of contracts.
  8. Manage the processing and filing of invoices.
  9. Deal with any permissions requests that arise.
  10. Send out gratis copies to authors and illustrators each month ahead of publication.
  11. Metadata assistance.
  12. Help the editorial team keep our content management system up-to-date.
  13. Work with the Metadata Manager in both the UK and the US to become a metadata super-user, advising the editorial team on good practice in creating blurbs and keywords.
  14. Other duties.
  15. Complete any ad-hoc tasks that come up e.g. (but not restricted to) posting.
  16. Take minutes for departmental meetings when required.

Position Specifications

  1. Minimum Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Required

  • Excellent grasp of the English language including spelling and grammar.
  • Detail-oriented and efficient at juggling a large number of tasks.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and Acrobat.
  • A passion for children’s illustrated books.

Desired

  • Some knowledge of Indesign.

  • A-level educated.

  • Knowledge of the standard industry proofreading symbols.
