Children’s Books – Editorial Assistant (Entry Level)

Sweet Cherry Publishing is an independent children’s publisher based in Leicester.  We are now looking for an entry-level Editorial Assistant to join our team.
 

You will be a graduate with a desire to work in publishing, and preferably will have experience of editing other people’s work. You will primarily work to support the editorial team and help them meet publication deadlines on a variety of projects. You will also liaise with the production department to ensure that no mistakes remain in any material sent to print. You will be detail-orientated and organised with excellent literary skills and a positive work ethic. You will also have good communication skills and an awareness of current trends in the children’s market.  
 

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Working on various stages of the editorial process to deliver a high standard of content
  • Implementing and maintaining house style to texts and supporting content
  • Writing blurbs, synopses and similar supporting material
  • Communicating with authors to discuss deadlines, creative concepts and work on the editorial process
  • Considering manuscripts and making decisions on whether to present them to the Managing Editor for further consideration
  • Working with the design and production department to ensure that imagery accurately represents content and communicates the author’s vision
  • Checking final files before they are sent to print as part of the sign-off process
  • Liaising with the sales and marketing departments and ensuring that their Advance Information sheets and other promotional material is always up to date
  • Adhering to tight deadlines
  • Reporting progress to your Manager
  • Researching and understanding the current children’s book market

Key Skills:
(Essential)

  • Proven experience editing and writing texts either at university or in a professional capacity
  • Good understanding of MS Office, particularly Word and Excel
  • Meticulous attention to detail and exceptional spelling and grammar
  • Time management: ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work as part of a small, but friendly team
  • A positive, can-do attitude to ensure problems can be solved efficiently and effectively
  • Willingness to learn
  • The ability to work from your own initiative
  • A creative approach to problem-solving
  • A sense of fun and an interest in publishing and all things literature!

(Desirable)

  • A degree in English, creative writing, publishing or other relevant degree
  • Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
  • Experience in a publishing environment
  • Experience communicating feedback to third parties
  • Particular interest in children’s publishing

Permanent, full-time position
 

Subject to six month probationary period
 

Start date: This is negotiable, we are willing to be flexible regarding the start date and take any exam/course commitments into consideration within reason.
 

Rate of pay: £7.05per hour for those aged 24 and under, and £7.50 per hour for those aged 25 plus.
