Children’s Project Editor

Thames & Hudson is one of the world’s leading art publishers and produces some of the most beautiful and high quality illustrated books for children. We are looking for a proactive and creative project editor, with strong written and visual skills, to work on a variety of projects including illustrated non-fiction, picture books, activity books and pop-ups. Our award-winning list encompasses a wide range of subjects from art and ancient history to natural history, science and fiction, making it an exciting list to contribute to.

 

You will need to have a minimum two years' editorial experience as an Assistant Editor or Editor in children’s publishing.

 

Key duties will include:

  • Managing book projects independently from proposal stage through to delivery, ensuring books are delivered on schedule, to budget and to a high standard
  • Development-editing draft content structures and draft manuscripts
  • Researching and copywriting non-fiction books in collaboration with external consultants and experts, ensuring they are suitable for the target age range
  • Shaping stories and copyediting texts to make them engaging to the reader
  • Providing clear visual feedback to illustrators and designers to achieve an integration of image and text on the page
  • Managing freelance editors, designers and contributors, and commissioning fact-checkers and sensitivity readers to review finished layouts
  • Copyediting and proofreading text for books, marketing and sales material
  • Checking proofs, text PDFs, plotters and f&gs before printing
  • Liaising with Design, Production, Picture Research, Rights, Sales and Marketing to ensure each party is supplied with all necessary materials and information
  • Identifying and developing new book proposal ideas
  • Overseeing submissions from international publishers and managing unsolicited proposals
  • General administration as required

 

You will have:

  • Strong editorial copyediting, copywriting and proofreading skills
  • Accurate research and fact-checking skills
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Experience shaping and copyediting picture book narratives
  • Strong eye for illustration with the ability to clearly articulate feedback on an illustration or design
  • Efficient time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • A clear understanding of publishing processes
  • Clear and persuasive communication skills
  • Genuine enthusiasm and passion for children’s books and illustration
  • Sensitivity and awareness of diversity and inclusion issues
  • Proficiency in Indesign; some experience of Photoshop and Illustrator an advantage
