Reporting to: Editorial Director, Art and Children’s Publishing / Head of Editorial
General overview
To provide comprehensive commissioning and editorial support to the Editorial Director, Art and Children’s Publishing; to edit and project manage a range of titles across the Art list.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Author liaison and commissioning support, to include assessing and developing proposals; coordinating and chasing the delivery of text and illustrations; assessing manuscripts and picture lists in relation to the original outline and relaying development edits and comments to authors; dealing directly with issues and questions raised by authors.
- Tracking the status of all titles across the Art list, as well as project managing individual selected titles from delivery to completion, including: coordinating handover of materials to and between producing departments; managing freelancers to ensure that production schedules are adhered to; checking cover/jacket, image and text proofs; picture research and collation; copyediting and proofreading text.
- Researching new book ideas, authors and competition; research for revised editions; drafting and analysing estimates; drafting contracts; requesting and analysing picture budget estimates.
- Providing materials to sales, marketing and foreign rights: planning, editing and managing the creation of book fair dummies; writing AIs and EAIs; checking catalogue copy; supplying text and imagesmanaging author payments and comp. copies; setting up book fair meetings; helping to programme events surrounding book publication.
Skills & Experience:
- Solid, relevant editorial experience at a publisher (ideally illustrated) or the publishing department of a museum, gallery or university – including editing and project management experience.
- A degree in art, design or the humanities, along with an informed understanding of art history and contemporary art.
- A demonstrable interest in and knowledge of visual arts and culture.
- Solid, relevant editorial experience at a publisher (ideally illustrated) or the publishing department of a museum, gallery or university.
- First-class command of English spelling and grammar, and a keen eye for detail.
- Self-motivation, the ability to prioritise tasks and to work with others flexibly.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing.
- Accurate keyboard skills.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat Pro an advantage..
