Production Manager

Given the massive rise in the use of technology within schools and the way that children are now accessing and digesting information digitally, Education Technology is one of the fastest growing sectors in commercial education.

We are currently looking to hire a Production Manager to manage the production of a range of student and teacher editions of high quality science books for the US market that will complement our digital content. This is a great opportunity for a strong manager to make an impact on the business.

The main purpose of this role is to manage the end-to-end process, from agreeing specifications for the print work through to the final delivery of the product to the market. The role offers a wide scope of responsibility and variety - you’ll manage quotes, advise on efficient formats and find the best print solution for the needs of the project. You need to have strong print buying skills and preferably you will have established relationships with small and large job commercial printers in the US and/or internationally.

Core responsibilities:

  • Provide project and production management for the core print program including student, teacher and ancillary editions of textbooks
  • Serve as the lead point of contact in publishing services for editorial, design, marketing and sales, producing products that meet market and customer needs and contribute to business unit revenue growth
  • Develop the List of Books – this matrix of assets will be referenced and used by all stakeholders for information and decision making
  • Assign and supervise vendors, providing feedback and training to production staff and vendors as required
  • Effectively create and monitor print production schedules, costs and technical performance of component projects and vendor activities
  • Ensure integrity and quality measures are in place for content creation and execution, page makeup, and file-building for print products
  • Work with vendors to develop prepress procedures and ensure successful prepress flight check
  • Travel to press to ensure correct colour processing
  • Supervise the creation, file archiving, and delivery of barcodes/ISBNS program.
  • Create a system to inform stakeholders of production progress
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively to meet deadlines.

This is a senior role, reporting to the CFO/Director of Content, and needs a fully trained Production Manager with at least 5 years experience within the print and publishing industry. The role could be based in London or in Glasgow and may involve US travel.

Skills & experience:

  • Proven and successful production management experience
  • Full knowledge and understanding of print processes
  • Strong project management capabilities
  • Customer focused, client facing personality
  • Communication – able to get the message across by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience
  • Managing relationships and team working – able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people
  • Analytical thinking – able to simplify complex problems, processes or projects into component parts, explore and evaluate them systematically
  • Decision making – able to take the initiative, trigger action and be responsible for decisions that are made.

What do we offer you?

  • Competitive salary DOE
  • Pension scheme
  • 29 days annual leave, including public holidays
  • Unlimited snacks (healthy and not so healthy!) in the office
  • An opportunity to join an established yet dynamic Ed Tech company in the fastest growing sector in education.
