Assistant Designer

Quarto Publishing require an enthusiastic and organized Assistant Designer to support the Young Quarto design department. Young Quarto – consisting of words & pictures, QED Publishing, Quarto Children’s Books and Small World Creations – offers customers an integrated and comprehensive 0-10+ range, created by a dynamic team with unique expertise and a focus on innovative, interactive formats.

 

The successful applicant will work on a wide range of children’s books and have the opportunity to develop their design skills within a dynamic team. You must have excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills, be proficient in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, able to juggle multiple projects and work well under pressure.

 

The Assistant Designer will assist the Senior Designers with the creation, development and delivery of all Young Quarto imprints. The main duties will include layout and design of illustrated non-fiction books for children, illustration and picture research as needed; assisting with pre-press tasks such as image processing, pdf creation, proof checking and reprint corrections.

 

Key responsibilities:

Book Design

  • Design and layout books as scheduled, under the supervision of a Senior Designer
  • Liaise regularly with freelance resources throughout design and layout to ensure a quality product
  • Review illustrations, images and layout to ensure they meet the brief and quality standards
  • Conduct image research as needed
  • Prepare images for print, including cropping, converting and sharpening
  • Ensure the timely delivery of all production and prepress activities to schedule
  • Maintain/oversee the upkeep of all files to required standards of file management
  • Make reprint corrections as needed
  • Check page and printer proofs and implement corrections where required
  • Assist with various design tasks, as requested

 

Key Skills

  • Some previous print design experience, ideally in illustrated book publishing
  • Excellent Adobe CC skills
  • Basic knowledge of book production processes from concept to publication
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision
  • Solid problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Deadline oriented, with a demonstrated ability to work under pressure
  • Lots of enthusiasm
