We're working with a prestigious scientific society specialising in environmental research and natural sciences, who are hiring for an Assistant Editor to work with one of their esteemed OA journals and its connected online repository. The Assistant Editor will support and oversee the expansion of an online platform and journal aimed at bridging the gap between ecological practitioners and researchers.

About you:

Ideal candidates for this role should be stepping up from an editorial role, either in STM publishing or in an ecological or environmental capacity (ie. ecological consultancy, environmental resource management, ecosystems services, or applied research). For those with publishing experience, we will be looking for a genuine interest in the topic, and a desire to translate academic research into practical applications within environmental studies. Similarly, candidates with ecological experience should exhibit an interest in STM publishing, ideally with some understanding of the publishing process, spanning journals, peer review and online resources.

While a deep understanding of both fields is not mandatory, candidates should be eager to learn and comfortable engaging in discussions on publishing and ecological topics with experts and stakeholders. The role requires a self-motivated individual capable of working independently on routine tasks while also being proactive and collaborative within a larger team environment, engaging with both colleagues and external stakeholders.

Overview of the role:

Overseeing the journal and database involves various tasks such as curating an online repository of ecological grey literature, overseeing a prompt and equitable peer review system for journal submissions, fostering connections with Editors, member organisations, advisors, and service providers, as well as coordinating marketing, publicity, and web-based initiatives for both the journal and the platform.

You will work closely with external partners and internal teams to ensure the efficient operation the programme, including performing basic checks on uploaded literature, maintaining membership databases, and providing reports on membership and website statistics. Additionally, you will be expected to cultivate relationships with member organisations, facilitate administrative tasks related to recruitment and contracts, and monitor membership engagement.

You will they contribute to the preparation and running of advisory and editorial board meetings, provide regular reports on manuscript processing, support associate editors, and assist with various tasks to ensure the overall success of the society's publishing operation.

In the context of the assigned journal, the role involves managing the editorial office, ensuring the smooth flow of manuscript submissions, coordinating with editors and reviewers, addressing author and reviewer queries, and resolving any disputes or ethical issues that may arise during the peer review process. The role also extends to marketing and communication efforts, liaising with internal colleagues to promote the online resource and the journal through online campaigns, printed materials, social media, and presentations at relevant events.
