Assistant Editor

Our client is a leading society publisher of books and journals based in central London, they are now looking for hire an Assistant Editor.

In this role as Assistant Editor you will report into the Product Manager. As part of the publishing department, you will be responsible for supporting the commissioning team to deliver new products on time, within budget and to an agreed specification.

This is an excellent role for anyone wanting to learn more about journal publishing and in particular, commissioning in journals as you will be supporting the commissioning team.



Key responsibilities

  • Manage the peer review process to ensure book proposals are of a high standard.
  • Assist the commissioning team with preparing proposal packs for consideration by the publishing committee.
  • Prepare and issue contracts for authors.
  • Provide direction and support to authors and editorial panels to ensure that projects are delivered in a timely manner and according to agreed specifications.
  • Evaluate manuscripts to ensure they meet ICE guidelines and the remit of the book contract.
  • Prepare and transmit manuscripts to production.
  • Work with the production team on matters of style, design, and quality to help ensure the quality and timely delivery of the end product.
  • Work with the marketing and sales teams to ensure products are promoted effectively and appropriately.
  • Maintain records and update the publications database to enable the commissioning team to produce accurate budgets and schedules.
  • Maintain records for the financial team to facilitate payment of royalties.

The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You also need excellent organisational and management skills together with being able to manage your time effectively. Some experience gained in publishing would also be desirable.

This is an excellent first step in to journal publishing. The closing date is the 6th January 2022.
